I read on a college level and wet the bed. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodnites.com\/en-us\/resources\/adhd-autism\/adhd-autism-and-bedwetting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bed wetting and gastrointestinal issues are common amongst Autistic people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This isn\u2019t well known outside the ASD community. I only learned that I was atypical when I started talking to the other kids in my grade on the phone about sleepovers, and got told bed wetting is \u201cweird\u201d for a 10-year old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was ashamed and embarrassed and didn\u2019t know what to do, so I turned to the Library for help. I asked one of my first friends, a librarian, for help and if you know <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZPR3p9BTs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mychal the librarian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then you know librarians are friends. My library friend helped me check out a book on bedwetting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mother often brought me and my sister to the library with her, so she could keep an eye on us. She was very protective and so I spent more time around books and librarians than I did around my peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember taking the book on bedwetting everywhere with me and reading it over and over\u2014doing the various suggestions, trialing and erroring, and\u00a0 discovering the key to success. This way, I taught myself how to stop wetting the bed; functionally, I potty trained myself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I learned from that experience that I could rely on asking for help and conducting research to counteract internalized shame. Now, anytime I find myself ashamed of something due to a gap in knowledge, I do this same practice. I ask for help and resources, do extensive research, and then apply what I\u2019ve learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this day, I\u2019m confused as to why it seems so many adults don\u2019t have the same capacity as I did as an Autistic child\u2013the self-awareness that shame denotes a lack of knowledge. For instance, I\u2019m ashamed that I voted for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/tamara-nassar\/genocide-joe-sets-tone-us-election-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Biden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019m ashamed that I never knew about the ongoing genocides happening in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2023\/11\/2\/a-genocide-is-under-way-in-palestine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palestine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/2\/21\/a-guide-to-the-decades-long-conflict-in-dr-congo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DR Congo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalr2p.org\/publications\/sudan-genocide-warning-letter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stopgenocidenow.org\/conflicts\/syria\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genocidewatch.com\/home\/categories\/middle-east\/yemen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yemen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many other colonized nations around the world. I am ashamed that I didn\u2019t speak up before now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wet the proverbial bed of my integrity and instead of lying in it, covered with urine-soaked shame and accepting that this is my life now, I did what I\u2019ve always done\u2014I took to education and self-compassion to work through that shame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I asked for help to conquer the shame and I was vulnerably honest about where it came from: a lack of knowledge. My candor was met with support, compassion, and a wealth of resources from a lot of caring people. Palestinian activists online held space for me and showed me how I could help, even though I couldn\u2019t march. They welcomed my desire to learn more and helped me to fill in the gaps of knowledge and also unlearn the Zionist propaganda I\u2019d \u201clearned\u201d in school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I first \u201clearned\u201d about Palestine from my Catholic high school when I was 15. Speakers from Palestine and Israel, respectively, came to our school to teach us the value of a 2-state solution and explained that there were \u201cfaults on both sides.\u201d The Israeli said the Palestinians should share their land with them, since they\u2019re already there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I, the Black Native child of a Black Panther, (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilrightsteaching.org\/resource\/from-freedom-to-liberation#:~:text=Among%20the%20most%20prominent%20of,late%201960s%20to%20the%20Freedom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or at least the recipient of Black Panther after school programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), was immediately suspicious of the discourse and, raising my hand, I asked why the Palestinians should have to share <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> land. I was cautioned against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decolonizepalestine.com\/myth\/the-palestinian-question-is-about-religion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antisemitic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remarks and my question was ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 years later, I had my first \u201cadult relationship\u201d with a white Jewish man who imposed a colonialist, and in hindsight Zionist\u00a0 control over my life. We once had a \u201cdiscussion\u201d about Israel, which I called \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decolonizepalestine.com\/faq\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occupied Palestine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and he cautioned me against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decolonizepalestine.com\/rainbow-washing\/faithwashing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antisemitism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He gaslit me into believing I didn\u2019t and couldn\u2019t know enough to have an opinion on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activism work I\u2019ve done since 2012 was done without the support of my partners and at the expense of my psyche. For years I faced online harassment and an inability to balance everything and wound up burning out over and over, watching my peers pass into early graves from stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve experienced years of abuse from partners, employers, and the US government who have mishandled my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/supplemental-security-income-for-people-with-disabilities-implications-for-medicaid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSDI\/SSI payments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so much I can hardly afford to survive. Most of what I live off of comes from mutual aid, after becoming further disabled from catching COVID-19 while living in a hostile situation last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second half of \u201823 was the first time in my life where I actually felt safe. Because, finally, I was safe and, happily, I still am. I have a really great support network and live with my life partner and best friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was learning how to live with a new disability (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.improvediagnosis.org\/publications\/improvedx-january-2022\/understanding-me-cfs-and-long-covid-as-post-viral-conditions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ME\/CFS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and adjusting to being bed bound when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/asa-winstanley\/watch-video-about-7-october-youtube-doesnt-want-you-see\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October 7th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happened. I then dedicated over 1K hours to posting about Palestine. Protesting from bed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My partner discovered the level of work I was doing and instead of discouraging me or accusing me of antisemitism, like my former partners had, he took on the role of a caretaker. I owe a lot of what I\u2019ve been able to do for the movement to him. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made sure I had food, that I was taking my medicine, that all my physical and emotional needs were being met. By caring for my mind and my body, he showed me what true solidarity means, reminding me to take care of myself with the words, \u201cFaati, you\u2019re a person, not a machine.\u201d He taught me it\u2019s important to remember the humanity of the person behind the activist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve applied this humanistic approach to the way I\u2019ve followed and written about Palestine on Twitter.\u00a0 For instance, I saw a need for accessible tweets via alt-text, so I started providing it.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sblahov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Blahovec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> qu<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hypefury.com\/blog\/en\/quote-tweeting-replying-engagement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ote tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 my posts about the genocide in Gaza, adding the hashtag #AltTextPalestine, so I started adding the hashtag too. In following her, I learned that there were many disabled activists like me working to support Palestine. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bluejay19xx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deaf Hottie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> communicated a need for captioned videos on Palestine for the Deaf\/HH, and so I began making captioned videos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I and many other Black Users on Twitter such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/wagatwe?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagatwe Wanjuki<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PrematureTantie?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@PrematureTantie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/babybunloaf?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@babybunloaf<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mimiwilliams1?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@mimiwilliams1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), spoke of the need for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FaatiTheStreet\/status\/1731269899287142667?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trigger warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on posts about the genocide in Gaza because we know firsthand, due to #BlackLivesMatters, the way our people\u2019s traumatization on the timeline can be detrimental to our mental health. We wanted to extend that same care for the Palestinian people that we\u2019re in solidarity with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determining who the true indigenous people of Palestine were was easy for me. If you\u2019re trying to see who is indigenous to the lands, look to who is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fslr2bZs864?si=VZfqCzCCdWyxFKvK\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protecting the trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and who is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/israel-palestine-settlers-attack-olive-harvest-most-dangerous-years\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killing them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Look to the people celebrating the culture, beauty, and history of the lands\u2014people like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wizardbisan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bisan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Gazan journalist, activist, and filmmaker. I started downloading and captioning Bisan\u2019s content because I felt connected to her love for her people and her country. I admire her bravery in stepping into the role of being a Gazan Journalist in a time where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/2\/15\/nearly-75-of-journalists-killed-in-2023-died-in-israels-war-on-gaza-cpj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 75% of all journalists killed in 2023 were Gazans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I regularly share her videos with the date, a title, captions, and a bulleted list of important info from the videos. I credit her by tagging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/wizardbisan?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her Twitter account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and always add #AltTextPalestine so her videos can easily be found by those who need them captioned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you search under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23AltTextPalestine&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=live\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#AltTextPalestine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tag you\u2019ll find a wealth of information to explore and to share. Everyone is capable of doing something to help free Palestine. Everyone\u2019s voice counts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak up, that\u2019s all the Palestinian people have asked us to do. Don\u2019t think of this as a trending topic. Don\u2019t be ashamed to say #CeaseFireNow. They\u2019re counting on us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a Disabled Black Native who was raised Muslim in America, I have a LOT connecting me to this struggle. My ancestors, the Mattamuskeet, have been fighting back against British and American colonization since the 1500s. I honor my ancestors with this work. I honor myself by continuing their tradition of fighting back against western colonialism and for the rights of Indigenous peoples everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally I want to say, I believe in armed resistance. I believe in people fighting back against their extermination with everything they have. I believe that our ancestors speak through us and to us everyday and helps us to stay centered and focused on the right course. I will never condemn a people for accomplishing incredible feats of strength and ingenuity to stay alive and to survive.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel stole <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/12\/israel-opt-us-made-munitions-killed-43-civilians-in-two-documented-israeli-air-strikes-in-gaza-new-investigation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/features\/drop-drop-israels-occupation-gazas-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the rain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alhaq.org\/publications\/6258.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplesworld.org\/article\/waves-of-yearning-a-palestinians-tale-of-dreams-and-the-stolen-sea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burned their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/israel-palestine-settlers-attack-olive-harvest-most-dangerous-years\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olive trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/content\/mcdonalds-confirms-no-arabic-policy-its-restaurants-israel\/5008\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demonized their languages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Took their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/program\/newsfeed\/2024\/2\/2\/palestinian-children-killed-in-israeli-attacks-in-gaza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">away forever for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2015\/4\/10\/israeli-courts-convict-hundreds-of-palestinian-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throwing rocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not sorry.
