On a table in front of me is a wheelchair battery charger.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>#N95s4UCSF: Call to Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m alive, bitches! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/covid-isnt-going-anywhere-masking-up-could-save-my-life\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My recent column in Teen Vogue about the surge and its impact on me as a high risk disabled person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became a terrifying reality when I had a medical emergency that required a visit to the ER and brief hospitalization in the ICU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled, immunocompromised, and chronically ill people know fully well that the world is not designed for us and how we are often dehumanized and considered burdens by the medical industrial complex. <a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityvisibilityproject.com\/2022\/08\/07\/my-icu-summer-a-photo-essay\/\">It is an exhausting struggle to be seen and heard while fighting to survive in the face of systemic oppression.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I was in the hospital <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sfdirewolf\/status\/1748913792556355646?s=46&amp;t=_GTkVMpGlsAuTXjmmv9HZA\">I tweeted some of my experiences<\/a> because <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sfdirewolf\/status\/1749030743542837302?s=46&amp;t=_GTkVMpGlsAuTXjmmv9HZA\">I needed to document<\/a> what was happening and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sfdirewolf\/status\/1748941458009125287?s=46&amp;t=_GTkVMpGlsAuTXjmmv9HZA\">do something while filled with fear.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing and organizing is a way to channel my rage and process my medical trauma. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I call upon you all to help me push for a N95 mask mandate at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/\">UCSF Health<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one should have to delay care or risk infection from COVID when receiving necessary medical care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you are not a patient at UCSF Health or resident in the Bay Area, here\u2019s what you can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Steps to Take<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read the complaint I made to the Office of Patient Relations (see below).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email them to demand UCSF Health require that all staff, visitors, and patients wear a N95 mask in all of their locations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your email to the Office of Patient Relations CC the leaders (see below) and BCC me so that I can keep track at <a href=\"mailto:N95Masks4UCSF@gmail.com\">N95Masks4UCSF@gmail.com<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share why you think a N95 mask mandate it\u2019s important for public health and if you are a patient or reside in the SF Bay Area. Do not claim to advocate for or on my behalf. Feel free to cut and paste my primary and additional policy recommendations and any other systemic changes you would like to see at UCSF Health. I did not provide a sample letter because I want you to tell your story and experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are part of an organization, try to get it to submit a message as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UCSFHospitals\">@UCSFHospitals<\/a> and use the hashtags <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/N95s4UCSF?src=hashtag_click\">#N95s4UCSF<\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23KeepMasksInHealthcare&amp;src=typed_query\">#KeepMasksInHealthcare<\/a> with a copy of your written response or a link to this blog post.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage your friends, colleagues, and family to do the same.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s keep each other safe! I am filing a patient complaint regarding my experience in the ED (emergency department) and ICU (intensive care unit) at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ucsfhealthhospitalmedicine.ucsf.edu\/clinical-services\/moffitt-long-medical-service\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moffitt\/Long Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> January 20-21, 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am including key members of leadership involved in innovation, patient services, employee safety, clinical services, strategic priorities, and human resources, because I am reporting systemic issues based on my individual experience that are not reflective of UCSF Health\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/about\/our-mission\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mission, visions and values.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/covid-isnt-going-anywhere-masking-up-could-save-my-life\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-risk disabled person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who is vulnerable to dying from COVID. Wearing a N95 mask is not effective for me since I cannot breathe through my nose or mouth and the in-line bacterial filter attached to my ventilator cannot protect me from COVID and other airborne viruses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Thursday my j-tube cracked making it unusable. Similar to previous incidents, I relied on the other (g-tube) for feeding, hydration, and medication as I am unable to eat by mouth or swallow until my outpatient appointment with IR (interventional radiology) at Moffitt\/Long on January 23, 2024. With increased pain at the site of my stomach stoma and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityvisibilityproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_3244.jpeg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a distended, rigid, and tender abdomen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that developed on Friday and Saturday, I reluctantly went to the ED because the pain became intolerable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aware of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/covid-variant-surge-testing-accuracy-rcna133699\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the current surge due to the JN.1 variant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I delayed going because of exposure and potential infection. Here are several elements to my complaint.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>OVERALL<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My concerns were minimized by several health care providers. I was not heard and seen as a human being.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did not receive <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/about\/quality-of-patient-care\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effective, safe, timely and equitable quality of care<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I was harmed and traumatized.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not safe receiving medical care at UCSF. This is not a \u201cfeeling.\u201d This is a fact for myself and a significant percentage of your vulnerable patient population who are part of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9781250796639\/theviralunderclass\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Viral Underclass<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a public health, infection control, and patient\/workplace safety issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lack of adequate masking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon arrival at the ED, the person who signed me in had a persistent cough and only wore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7106e1.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a blue surgical mask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being led to my room in the ED, I was distressed to see so many patients unmasked and coughing and majority of health care providers either unmasked or only wearing a surgical mask<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I requested a sign asking all people entering my room to wear a N95 posted outside the door<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A respiratory therapist came in and responded, \u201cI don\u2019t normally wear N95s. You are not airborne!\u201d A RT who does not understand 1) my request was not unreasonable; 2) I am clearly a high risk disabled patient with a tracheostomy who is vent-dependent;\u00a0 3) the dangers of airborne viruses in enclosed, crowded spaces are significant especially in a medical setting. Unable to speak, I wanted to say, \u201cI am surrounded by airborne pathogens in the ED. I\u2019m not the infectious one (yet), I am the one who needs protection.\u201d This was a truly disturbing interaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In IR the next day, the technician who set up the sterile field on my abdomen had a persistent cough the entire time while wearing a surgical mask. I could hear him in the back room during my procedure continuing to cough and clear his throat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I returned to the ICU after the g-j tube was replaced and requested to speak with the care team informing them about this complaint. My family friend verbally relayed my intentions and one doctor explained that staff are not obligated to wear N95s and surgical masks are the only ones they can wear by choice, ignoring my reasonable concerns. Another doctor proceeded to explain that my procedure took longer than expected which was not my chief complaint. The two doctors suggested I was anxious and needed to calm down. I mouthed my response translated by my friend that my \u201canxiety\u201d is actually anger at the way I was treated at IR and the excruciating pain I experienced (see below).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Communication access and inadequate pain relief<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the IR technician was setting up the sterile field, the only thing he said to me was \u201cSorry, this will be cold and sting\u201d as he disinfected my abdomen. Frantically, I tried to mouth the words to the nurse to tell him to be careful because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityvisibilityproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_3250-rotated.jpeg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my abdomen is in sharp pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She could not understand me and told me to stop moving when I writhed in pain bursting into tears as he swabbed my abdomen.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IR nurse said I could have pain medication and administered Versed; the ICU nurse who accompanied me to IR administered multiple doses of Fentanyl throughout the procedure to no avail.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one asked the two radiologists to pause for a few seconds for the drugs to take effect during the procedure. I was in agony and powerless to stop anything.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the +2 hour procedure, both nurses wiped tears that kept rolling down my face, advising me to take deep breaths and relax. This only compounded my anger and frustration resulting in tachycardia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityvisibilityproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_3251-rotated.jpeg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I cried so much due to acute pain during that procedure my eyes became swollen.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is unacceptable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon return to the ICU, my heart rate was over 200 beats per minute chalked up as \u201canxiety.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ICU team further defended the lack of communication access, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/factsheet\/communication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a right under the ADA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to the need to maintain a sterile field in IR which meant I could not write anything down as if it was my fault for being a non-speaking person. Healthcare providers know how to work with all kinds of bodies. I have no doubt <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ohns.ucsf.edu\/headandnecksurgery\/speech-team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech and Language Pathology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other departments could advise for a solution that does not endanger a sterile environment for procedures and surgeries. However, the ICU care team intimated it was an impossibility which I found disappointing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Primary Recommendation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the minimum, requirement of all staff, patients, and visitors to wear a N95, respirator, or its equivalent at all UCSF affiliates and locations indefinitely (in line with more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/mask-mandates-return-some-us-hospitals-covid-flu-jump-2024-01-04\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hospitals across the country reinstating mask mandates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/bay-area-mask-mandates-hospital-requirements-tripledemic-health-care-facilities\/13999066\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bay Area counties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/public-health-officials-reinstate-mask-mandate-at-la-county-health-care-facilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles County<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients come to the ED under great stress, fear, uncertainty, and discomfort. It is incredibly difficult to advocate for the bare minimum under such duress. Why should I have to opt in and request safety measures when it should be the default for everyone? No one should be unnecessarily at risk in outpatient (especially chemotherapy), emergency, and inpatient settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With my complex medical needs, extensive experience navigating the healthcare system, and ability to advocate for myself, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityvisibilityproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/ucsf.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I expect long wait times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityrightsca.org\/publications\/disability-discrimination-fact-sheet-business-and-other-public-accommodations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrimination,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/disability-barriers.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">barriers to care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and understand how hospitals are overcapacity along with financial and other strains. However, it should not take a pandemic, threat of legal action, or crisis for institutions to improve their practices. As a society, we cared for one another and found the political will and resources to pivot when the pandemic emerged in 2020 only to regress to a \u201cvax and relax,\u201d \u201cyou do you\u201d mentality where the burden to stay safe is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/05\/health\/coronavirus-swiss-cheese-infection-mackay.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individual responsibility rather than a collective one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creating conditions for future surges, new mutations, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zalaly\/status\/1748458876641423582\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more people developing Long COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-03225-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underfunded and under researched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/measles-outbreaks-reported-in-multiple-states-here-are-the-signs-and-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and new outbreaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID, measles, RSV, flu, and other infectious illnesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitigation measures that can reduce hospitalizations, reduce workforce shortages, prevent delayed care (which can be more costly), protect immunocompromised, and high risk patients and staff, and decrease community transmission should be part of UCSF Health\u2019s mandate which are firmly aligned with its mission and reputation as a world-class research and healthcare institution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Additional recommendations\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free PCR tests for all UCSF Health staff\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Installation of UV lighting and\/or upgraded ventilation\/filtration at all UCSF Health locations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner with a nonprofit or manufacturer to mail free N95 masks to all patients for their future appointments and visits to UCSF Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiosks at all UCSF Health locations reporting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcitiesworld.net\/air-quality\/boston-uses-smart-city-kiosks-to-provide-air-quality-updates-9229\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-time indoor air quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surpass state <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2024\/01\/california-covid-rule-isolation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 isolation guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for staff testing positive to more than one day\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner and support <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1OFcw3VIcAkki1BlK4TU0PV4L5BneLcIEUN0jEJbEAvE\/htmlview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local mask blocs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CovidSaferSF\/status\/1726394432558399502\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community-based efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that promote COVID precautions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Update HR and infection control policies to require masking, isolation protocols, and reporting of positive results for airborne illnesses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Update <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/covid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID information for visitors and patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online page about the mask mandate and information on how to request reasonable accommodations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishment of COVID safety workgroup with representatives from patients, staff, and community members that has the directive to gather feedback and outline actionable items to UCSF Health leadership\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Rationale<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My proposed recommendations invites UCSF Health to invest in infrastructure and their people to protect everyone now and in the future. By integrating science-driven, evidence-based improvements that raise the bar above legal compliance, UCSF Health will be a leader that puts their commitment to equity, diversity, culturally competent care, and excellence into practice in tangible ways ensuring the wellness of the public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can already imagine the response to this letter: \u201cWe are not obligated to go beyond what is legally required,\u201d \u201cWe do not have the resources or money to institute these changes,\u201d \u201cThese changes will take years of planning and implementation,\u201d and \u201cStaff, patients, and visitors will object and this for privacy and civil liberties reasons and it will open us up to legal actions by them.\u201d These are my counterarguments:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compliance to the law is a low bar. Real leadership recognizes that progress can only happen by being creative and having the foresight to go above and beyond what is expected; to have a vision for a more equitable and accessible world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the pandemic first emerged in March 2020, institutions like UCSF Health responded with urgency and were able to find the money and resources to continue providing care (e.g., online appointments via Zoom). The pandemic is not over nor is it endemic; surges, outbreaks, and new pandemics will continue to happen and hospitals need to take a proactive approach to reducing risk that will also be cost effective and beneficial to all.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years into the pandemic, there has been a preponderance of data on the efficacy of high-quality masks, vaccines, antivirals, and ways to improve indoor air quality. Hospitals, schools, and businesses had the time and information to make changes but simply haven\u2019t. If we keep the same sense of urgency to adjust in response to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/07\/25\/long-covid-persists-as-a-mass-disabling-event\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a mass disabling event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, institutions can summon the political will to implement changes as soon as possible. This is all dependent on the values and commitment by leadership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am old enough to remember the controversy on campus when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2005\/06\/101368\/ucsf-become-nearly-smoke-free-july-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking in public spaces was banned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when I was a staff research associate at the Institute for Health and Aging. People used to smoke inside hospitals. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9632745\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handwashing during medical procedures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took over a hundred years to become standard practice despite the knowledge that it would reduce the spread of pathogens which cost many doctors their careers for being early adopters.
