I honed my voice as a writer, found community, and carved out places by creating the hashtag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/cripthevote-movement-2016-election_n_57279637e4b0f309baf177bd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#CripTheVote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example. From <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/03\/07\/469521879\/pre-peeled-oranges-what-some-call-lazy-others-call-a-lifesaver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Peeled Fruit Debate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2018\/7\/19\/17586742\/plastic-straw-ban-disabilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic straw bans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I participated in conversations that push back at ableism where the scenario follows the same formula repeatedly:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nondisabled person mocks something important to disabled people, often calling us lazy, ignorant, or bitter;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled people reply refuting the casual ableism, tell their story, and spend time providing information;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nondisabled person becomes the victim, gets defensive, and doubles down<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few days ago <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfavs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Favreau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the co-host of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crooked.com\/podcast-series\/pod-save-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pod Save America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has over a million followers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfavs\/status\/1740533486614909254\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screenshot and commented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a Tweet by someone in response to Sen. Bernie Sanders\u2019 announcement that he tested positive for COVID, planned to work from home, and was glad to be vaccinated. I began to read numerous cogent responses by people with Long COVID and other chronic illnesses and disabilities about why Sanders\u2019 message was inadequate since it ignores the fact that many people do not have the privilege to work from home; how minimal activity can be detrimental to recovery; and how vaccines cannot be the only source of mitigation especially as the Senator is Chair of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Didn\u2019t realize this brand of person is still at it on here. Impressive stamina. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rNGiaLXZFm\">pic.twitter.com\/rNGiaLXZFm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jon Favreau (@jonfavs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfavs\/status\/1740533486614909254?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outrage, frustration, and sadness in the replies was real; people were tired of the \u201cvax and relax\u201d narrative and glib responses like the ones from Favreau. I Tweeted suggesting people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SFdirewolf\/status\/1740606609351696515\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push for an episode on long COVID policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the podcast with the tag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PodSaveJon?src=hashtag_click&amp;f=live\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#PodSaveJon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because he and other progressives do not understand the magnitude of abandonment of high risk people by the state and how far away we still are from having any tools or solutions for people with and developing Long Covid (which can happen to anyone). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Long Covid still affects millions of people and with no cure and little support, with even the Census trying to discount us, the disabled\/immunocompromised\/chronically ill community who still care about Covid should be heard not further silenced. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PodSaveJon?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PodSaveJon<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Uc8tyac8GU\">https:\/\/t.co\/Uc8tyac8GU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aparna R. (@aparna_r_writer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aparna_r_writer\/status\/1740635529111392569?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashtags don\u2019t always take off but this one resonated deeply with disabled and sick people who have been forgotten and gaslit since and before the pandemic. An outpouring of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheChalis\/status\/1740956580793688332\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deeply personal stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SFdirewolf\/status\/1742250077551501321\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happened and this became much more than about one person\u2019s ableism, but about the pervasive framing of disabled outrage as bullying, piling on, and \u201cunhinged\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfavs\/status\/1740746321726955710\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sanist slur used by Favreau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As someone who curses on his podcast, Favreau tone policing people with Long COVID and saying this type of advocacy is counterproductive and absurd is the height of respectability politics and privilege.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yes Favs, what disability advocates find persuasive is when people are like, \u201cI temporarily experienced the condition you had but I\u2019m better now and not disabled\u201d and call someone unhinged. You\u2019re definitely taking the pulse of this discourse accurately \/s<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Amanda Hu (@amandalhu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandalhu\/status\/1740773805889605763?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not limited to Favreau, he and other nondisabled people determine what is reasonable and what kind of advocacy is legitimate since they seem to know much more than millions of people actually impacted. The \u201cpandemic is over\u201d crowd thinks it\u2019s admirable to work while sick and that wearing masks is virtue signaling or a symptom of a mental illness. When I thought the conversation would taper after a few days, Favreau belittled users of #PodSaveJon and clutched his dudebro pearls at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfavs\/status\/1741941126482047418\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being called an ableist eugenicist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spurring even more outrage by people who are fighting for their lives and genuinely want him to do better. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled and chronically ill people expended immense amounts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/medicaid-coverage-covid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time, energy, care, and labor just to survive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and be heard only to be trivialized once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I made the mistake of commenting on the absurdity of this particular outrage and have been called an ableist eugenics advocate by a lovely crew of folks who seem pretty excited that they briefly got <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PodSaveJon?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PodSaveJon<\/a> trending. <\/p>\n<p>This place is the best.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jon Favreau (@jonfavs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfavs\/status\/1741941126482047418?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 1, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c#PodSaveJon captured the boiling point of Long Covid, disability and vulnerable communities in their rage. This was never about Jon\u00a0 \u2014 this was about being profoundly ignored by our media, politics, &amp; progressive organizations and figures \u2014 he just happened to represent all three.\u201d \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/loscharlos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlie McCone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patient advocate with Long COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hashtag, while derided by some as \u201cnot real\u201d activism, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/9780262043373\/hashtagactivism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an organizing tool, one tactic out of many<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the 2024 election year gearing up, Democrats like Jon Favreau have shown how little they care about the politics of being disabled while expecting votes from us. It\u2019s no wonder why people are cynical, feel taken for granted, and turned off from any kind of political participation. Long COVID is going to be a major policy issue this year and people are watching to see which candidates, if any, will include it on their platform. Minimized as personal attacks, people like Favreau miss the larger issues raised in critiques by disabled people at their own peril.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite at least 14 million American adults and millions more children currently experiencing Long COVID, with BIPOC communities, transgender people, and women disproportionately impacted, no bills have been passed in Congress regarding care or support for people with Long COVID and we\u2019re at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patientresearchcovid19.com\/advocacy\/letter-to-president-biden-fy25-budget\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of no dedicated research funding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2025. The politicization of COVID has made it so any efforts to help people with Long COVID are essentially dead-on-arrival in Congress, and this piles on top of the historical neglect and underfunding of infection-associated chronic conditions pre-COVID. There are only a handful of pharmacological clinical trials in the works, and patients do not have access to high-quality care to manage their symptoms, whether due to wait times, being in a rural area, or the fact that only 4% of physicians are very confident treating the condition. Not only are we seeing estimated economic costs of $3.7 trillion in the first five years alone, but we\u2019re continuously being exposed to the giant gaps in our social safety net meant to provide for disabled people who are unable to work. Long COVID has impacted or will impact nearly every policy area \u2013 from healthcare to human services to economics to education to infrastructure to defense &#8211; yet the establishment is putting their heads in the sand and acting as though the problem will miraculously go away. It\u2019s not going away, and in fact, is only increasing as COVID continues to spread and reinfections leading to higher risk of developing Long COVID.\u201d \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LisaAMcCorkell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa McCorkell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patientresearchcovid19.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient-Led Research Collaborative<\/span><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled outrage is necessary and liberatory; it reveals the fissures in society and the consequences of structural oppression. It comes from a place of hurt and injustice. It is resistance against erasure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">He could have said nothing? Instead he made a public statement as a public official.<br \/>Now all you <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MedicareForAll?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MedicareForAll<\/a> advocates are white knighting for your bro instead of acknowledging the huge miss on a labor\/healthcare justice issue &#8211; issues you\u2019ve built YOUR brand on.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PodSaveJon?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PodSaveJon<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/adOOh92lC7\">https:\/\/t.co\/adOOh92lC7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Angela M.
