Alice Wong<\/b> (she\/her) is a disabled activist, writer, editor, and community organizer. Alice is the founder and director of the<\/span> Disability Visibility Project<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> an online community dedicated to creating, sharing, and amplifying disability media and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alice is a co-partner in four projects: <\/span>DisabledWriters.com<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a resource to help editors connect with disabled writers and journalists,<\/span> #CripLit <\/span><\/a>(no longer active), <\/span>a series of Twitter chats for disabled writers with novelist<\/span> Nicola Griffith<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>#CripTheVote<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a nonpartisan online movement encouraging the political participation of disabled people with co-partners Andrew Pulrang and Gregg Beratan, and<\/span> Access Is Love <\/span><\/a>with co-partners<\/span> Mia Mingus and Sandy Ho<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a campaign that aims to help build a world where accessibility is understood as an act of love instead of a burden or an afterthought.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alice\u2019s areas of interest are popular culture, media, politics, disability representation, Medicaid policies and programs, storytelling, social media, and activism.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1997 she graduated with degrees in English and sociology from Indiana University at Indianapolis. She has a MS in medical sociology and worked at the University of California, San Francisco as a Staff Research Associate for over 10 years. During that time she worked on various qualitative research projects and co-authored<\/span> online curricula<\/span><\/a> for the<\/span> Community Living Policy Center<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a Rehabilitation Research and Training Center funded by the <\/span>National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognized for her service to the community and activism at the local and national level, Alice received the<\/span> Beacon Award<\/span><\/a> by the San Francisco Mayor\u2019s Disability Council in 2010 and the <\/span>Disability Service Award<\/span><\/a> by the University of California, San Francisco in 2011. From 2013 to 2015 Alice served as a member of the<\/span> National Council on Disability<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> an independent federal agency charged with advising the President, Congress, and other federal agencies regarding policies, programs, practices, and procedures that affect people with disabilities, <\/span>appointed by President Barack Obama<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Alice was the recipient of the<\/span> 2016 AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>an award for emerging leaders with disabilities who exemplify leadership, advocacy, and dedication to the broader cross-disability community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alice launched the<\/span> Disability Visibility podcast<\/span><\/a> in September 2017 as host, co-audio producer, and writer. She edited and self-published<\/span> Resistance and Hope: Essays by Disabled People<\/span><\/i><\/a> in October 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018 Alice was featured in the<\/span> Bitch 50<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a list recognizing the most impactful creators, artists, and activists in pop culture by Bitch Media and<\/span> Colorline\u2019s 20 X 20<\/span>, <\/span>a group of transformative leaders reimagining what it means to advance racial justice.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020 Alice was named by Time magazine as one of<\/span> 16 people fighting for equality in America.<\/span><\/a> Alice self-published and edited<\/span> #ADA30InColor<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a series of essays by disabled people of color in July. Alice was featured with activists such as Angela Davis and Dr. Bernice A. King on the cover of<\/span> British Vogue\u2019s September issue<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>For the Pop Culture Collaborative, she guest edited<\/span> Break The Story Volume IV: Disability Visibility<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>a snapshot of disability. Along with 19 other disabled artists, Alice was named a<\/span> Disability Futures fellow<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> a grant by the Ford Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation administered by United States Artists. Alice also received the Indiana University Bicentennial Medal for her contributions to disability justice and broadening the reach of IU around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021, Alice was named a changemaker by Marie Claire magazine<\/a>. She co-edited a digital issue that year, The Access Series<\/a> with Bitch Media that expands the meaning of access in everyday life. Alice’s first role as a voice actor was in Someone Dies In This Elevator podcast, season 1, episode 11, “Hot Wheels,”<\/a> as Waverly.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022, Alice was included in Gold House’s A100 List<\/a>, a list honoring 100 Asians and Pacific Islanders\u00a0 who had the most impact on culture and society over the past year. She created the Society of Disabled Oracles<\/a> with co-partners Aimi Hamraie and Jen White-Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alice is the editor of <\/span>Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century<\/span><\/a> (Vintage Books, 2020)<\/span>,<\/span> an anthology of essays by disabled people and\u00a0 Disability Visibility: 17 First-Person Stories for Today<\/a> an adapted version of the anthology for young readers (Delacorte Press 2021).<\/span><\/p>\n

Her debut memoir,<\/span> Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life<\/span><\/a> is available now from Vintage Books. Disability Intimacy<\/a>, her next anthology, will be out in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023, Alice became a columnist for Teen Vogue<\/span><\/a> and recipient of the Community Award from the<\/span> Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/span>She also was a voice actor portraying Alice, a character loosely based on her, in season two of <\/span>Human Resources<\/span><\/a>, an animated series on Netflix.\u00a0<\/span>In partnership with Eater, Alice co-edited <\/span>Low and Slow<\/span><\/a>, a series of food writing by disabled people. <\/span>Year of the Tiger<\/em><\/a> received a Northern California Book Award<\/a> for creative nonfiction. <\/span>For the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Alice became the <\/span>podcaster-in-residence<\/span><\/a> for <\/span>Raw Material podcast.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

In 2024, Year of the Tiger<\/em><\/a> was selected as the Adult Nonfiction Winner<\/a> by the Asian\/Pacific American Librarians Association.\u00a0Her latest anthology, Disability Intimacy: Essays on Love, Care, and Desire<\/i><\/a> is available now. She co-edited the All Access issue<\/a> with PopSugar celebrating accessibility and disabled people in the outdoors. Alice was named a MacArthur Fellow<\/a> this year as well.<\/p>\n
