This chat is timed to celebrate the publication earlier this month of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Resistance-Hope-Essays-Disabled-People-ebook\/dp\/B07FVZN7Q4\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resistance and Hope<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an anthology of essays by disabled people, edited by Alice Wong. But the questions are for all of us&#8211;all disabled writers are welcome. We want a good conversation about our community&#8217;s values, joys, and struggles around resistance and hope!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>About<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/alice-wong\/65\/7b4\/441\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice Wong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a disability activist, media maker, and consultant. She is the Founder and Director of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/disabilityvisibilityproject.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability Visibility Project\u00ae<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DVP), a community partnership with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/storycorps.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StoryCorps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an online community dedicated to recording, amplifying, and sharing disability stories and culture created in 2014. Alice is also a co-partner in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabledwriters.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DisabledWriters.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a resource to help editors connect with disabled writers and journalists, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cripthevote.blogspot.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#CripTheVote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nonpartisan online movement encouraging the political participation of disabled people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice\u2019s areas of interest are popular culture, media, politics, disability issues, Medicaid policies and programs, storytelling, social media, and activism. She has been published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2018\/7\/19\/17586742\/plastic-straw-ban-disabilities\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eater<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitchmedia.org\/article\/disability-visibility-tammy-duckworth\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitch Media<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/disabled-people-representation\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen Vogue<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/03\/opinion\/my-medicaid-my-life.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/transom.org\/2016\/alice-wong\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transom<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rootedinrights.org\/valuing-activism-of-all-kinds\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rooted in Rights<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2013 to 2015 Alice served as a member of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncd.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Council on Disability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncd.gov\/newsroom\/2013\/Feb052013\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appointment by President Barack Obama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She has a master\u2019s in medical sociology and worked at the University of California, San Francisco as a Staff Research Associate for 15 years. She was born and brought up in Yorkshire, England, where she earned her beer money teaching women\u2019s self-defense, fronting a band, and arm-wrestling in bars, before discovering writing and moving to the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After her 1993 diagnosis of multiple sclerosis she focused on writing. Her essays and short fiction have appeared in a variety of journals, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Scientist, Los Angeles Review of Books<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LitHub<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her work has won, among others, the Washington State Book Award, the Tiptree, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards, the Premio Italia, and Lambda Literary Award (six times), and is translated into 13 languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has served as a Trustee of the Multiple Sclerosis Association and the Lambda Literary Foundation.
